Located in Marine Corps in the middle of a field white pipe to the right of the path. Metal Pipe cemented into the ground and a continuous flow of clean water has been flowing for many years at least 85.

Please keep the area around the spring clean the Marines threatened to close access because people were littering. Please be respectful and clean after yourself if you want access to the spring to remain open.

Nearest Address

Ontario Avenue & Victory Blvd.

Directions from Nearest Address

From Victory Blvd near Clove Lakes ice skating rink turn onto Onario avenue and go up one block on the right side you will see the Marines facility and a fence opening to walk. Use the walking opening in the fence not the car opening.

Vital Information

  • Fee: None
  • Access: Private
  • Flow: Continuous
  • TDS: 95
  • Temp: 56 F
  • pH: 7.6

Hours Spring is Open:

Not sure, usually 24 hours but I have heard it is sometimes closed when the Marines are using the field for a party. (You have to walk thru the field to get to the spring.) The spring is on private property owned by the Marine Corps League, a fraternal group for current and former members of the service, but the fountain is open to the public when they are not using the field.

Just got back from the Staten Island Spring. Thank you Daniel!Met alot of nice people on the bus ride out there and back. I live in lower Manhattan, so it was about a three hour excursion. Really nice to take off my shoes and smell the leaves. Thank you again. Met a lady on the way back who took down the info and is going to go.

Bad news the gate is locked by the Staten Island Marine Corps League Detachment 246 because of vandalism by local kids; Any marines that could speak to
Commandant: Anthony (Butch) Sarcone Telephone 718-447-2306 and ask him to open up access to the water. I spoke to Butch he is a nice guy and he knows it was not the people who
get water who vandalized the fence but the league voted to keep the gate locked.

    Nearest Address:
    Ontario Avenue and Schoharie Street.

There is a metal mesh gate entrance by field with a sticker on a faded metal sign near entrance gate stating….”live free or die”. Enter here!!!
If gate is open, then access to the spring is available. Enter the metal fence gate, up slight step dirt, tree rooted entry, keep walking about 30 feet (there should be a metal mesh fence to your immediate right…follow it) past the yellow fence and spring is to the right.

  • Niceleedone

I forgot to add….absolutely cold, clean and exhilaratingly refreshing!!!

  • Onano3

    Hello All,
Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the NYC water test results? Also, if you notice the cross street is Schohari St. as in the upstate reservoir. This waster is delicious, I just want to make sure it is not contaminated.

  • Lumberjak1984

i checked the ph and it was 10.13…not 7.6. huge difference. jus saying.

  • gary

i found out that that this “spring” in fact is actually a well. booooo

  • Malkentzos Nick

I have never heard of a well that has a continuous flow of water? Where did you hear that? I will check the PH again next week when I checked last year it was 7.6 no one told me it was I saw the results myself. How did you test the PH?

  • Malkentzos

When it snows or ice the gate is often locked so those who do not live in the area be aware of the possibility of no access in bad weather

  • Lumberjak1984

I have. I tested with a 130 dollar ph/tds tester (Hannah) Besides all this, the natural springs are much better tasting.

  • Ismetcanovic

    why is the gate closed??

  • guest

It is now April 30th,2011 is the gate opened again Thanks

  • Anonymous

it was open last week but the weekend before it was closed because of a party.

This spring is fabulous!  Been drinking it exclusively for almost 2 years ~ We had is tested by Rutgers 03/2011.  The pH is actually 9.75.  The water is cold and constantly running.  Please be aware that the spring is on The Marine Corp League property.  They changed the access gate to the other side of the field and only ask that you keep it clean.  I have met everyone from the locals drinking the water their whole 70 something years, foreigners hauling water for their families for 20+ years to local basketball boys looking for a cool dink ~ I sink my bare feet in the mini pool while filling my jugs ~ Heaven!  Thank you Daniel!  and Mother Earth for this beautiful living water ~

  • Malkentzos

I really do not understand why some idiots would take a sledge hammer and try to destroy someones property who is opening their land for public use to access a natural spring?  Is it greed or just pure ignorance?  THe spring may be closed permanently?

  • njm

The gate has been locked for a couple of weeks please update this comment if the gate is reopened.  It would be nice if a former Marine would contact the Marine fraternity who  own the land and ask them to allow law abiding Americans access to the spring and not to encourage vandals who have been destroying their property so they prohibit access to the spring.

I am planing on going this sunday to get me some fresh water.
Reading Malkentzos comment worries me if though the spring is even still accessible to us public..? Someone please help me out, I don’t want to be going all the way down there for nothing.
    thnx ;)

  • Mars7977

It’s still closed. I might go down there and talk to the land owners tomorrow. If we could get a petition and donation from all of us who value the spring, maybe we can get access again.

  • Velvetstheory

How would I get here from New York City?

  • Velvetstheory

    Is it still closed?

  • Joy

I drove from Jersey City to sample the water today, 11/14/11.  It tastes metalic (iron or copper?).  When I got home, I tested the pH & was surprised it’s a 9 or 10!  No need to buy any expensive water ionizers/alkalizers!

  • Joy

Did you ever get the water test results?  I went there today, for the first time.  It tastes great, but has a long lasting metalic after taste.  When I tested the pH, I was surprised to get 9 or 10!

The Spring is repaired and open to the public 7 days week (unless the Marine Corp. league is having an event), between the hours of 12 noon and 6 pm.

  • Catherine

Is it possible to get a copy of that Rutgers report?  I would be willing to pay a fair price, as I am sure it wasn’t free to get it.
